MEET THE ARTIST
Rickie DuBurke
ARTIST’S STATEMENT: Quietly austere, mysterious and distant are a few of the adjectives that have been used to describe the art of Rickie DuBurke. Being born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, he was inundated by a myriad of colors, sounds and information. One seemingly ordinary evening, a subway ride home would prove to be a pivotal turning point in this artist’s development—one that would change the course of his work from that day forward. While the subway stood in the station, DuBurke noticed the torn posters and advertisements that lined the station walls. All that remained, against a black backdrop, were vestiges of what had been there previously. Although accidental, their design seemed perfect and planned. It was the order out of chaos that struck something in DuBurke. As the train pulled out of the station, everything was different. Within the catacombs of the subterranean, DuBurke found his means of expression. “That night I found my voice,” he says. His works are not figure compositions, they are not still lifes. They are not landscapes or abstracts. They are acrylic hand-painted collages, tapestries of interwoven thoughts and introspection, which make up his unique style. They are a declaration of his unwavering position on painting in truth of style, technique and content. To sum it up, Rickie DuBurke states, “The act of painting becomes an act of confession, while each painting becomes my confessor.”
